Work begins this month on a city-supported water conservation project that will see perimeter path improvements, xeriscaping, and grass removal.

Work will begin April 21 on an innovative water-conservation and landscaping project in Los Lagos Vistas.

D&D Landscaping will complete two phases of the plan, including perimeter path construction and a variety of landscaping, that will include drought-tolerant trees and plants.

Labeled 1 and 2, the phases cover large grassy areas and the perimeter path in the Townhome Section at the start of the perimeter path near Iverson Park and near the wash by Circle 2 near buildings 27 and 28.

About half of the approximately $10,000 project will be funded with a water-conservation grant from Lake Havasu City.

The City is revamping its water master plan and expects a final plan draft this fall. The revised plan seeks to manage new challenges, such as faster-than-expected population growth, potentially 3,500 new homes projected to be built in the next 15 years, and Colorado River resource challenges.

The city has already implemented or is implementing measures to reduce water use, including rate increases, recycling wastewater, instituting best practices for leak management, and requesting pools to be emptied into sewer systems for reclamation. About 60% of the city’s water use is residential.

The city reports that approximately one-half of treated wastewater generated from the three existing wastewater treatment plants is being used for irrigation with the balance diverted to either percolation ponds located on the Pittsburgh Island or to recharge underground water systems.

HOAs and multifamily residential complexes are special city targets for conservation.  Los Lagos Vistas’s project is expected to be a demonstration on how to approach water conservation with grass removal and use of xeriscaping. The City has discussed ideas to work with other city HOA’s using water-use measuring and response methods.

Los Lagos Vistas HOA has targeted seven areas for grass-removal and xeriscaping. The next two phases are along the wash north of Circle 2 and a grassy hill area north of Circle 4. Other areas may include a grassy area west of Circle 7 or portions of grassy areas near Circle 5 and Circle 6.
